Antique icons were mostly painted on wood, on a plaster coated board using egg tempera (natural egg yolk mixed with paint pigments). The oldest remaining iconic works have been painted back in the sixth century.Icons are divided into many types.The first and most solemn iconographic type is Virgin Mary the Way Pointer (Gr. Hodegetria) – portrayed frontally, on the one hand holding baby Jesus, the other pointing at him.Jesus blesses humanity with his right hand.Another extremely popular type of icons – Christ the almighty (Gr.
